Shoulder, Neck & Collarbone

These three placements frame the face. Anything here draws the eye upward and becomes part of how people read you before they hear you speak. That’s not good or bad — but it’s worth knowing before you commit.

Visibility and Professional Life

These three zones exist on a visibility spectrum. Shoulder tattoos are hidden by virtually any shirt with sleeves. Collarbone tattoos peek out of crew necks but hide under collared shirts. Neck tattoos are visible in almost everything except turtlenecks and scarves. Your visibility comfort level should drive the placement decision.

Neck tattoos specifically still carry more social weight than other placements. They’re associated with heavy commitment to the tattoo lifestyle. In some professional environments, they’re a non-issue. In others, they’re still a conversation. This is changing generationally, but as of now, a visible neck tattoo is a choice that some employers and clients will notice and react to. Side neck and behind-the-ear placements are slightly more subtle than front or throat tattoos.

How These Areas Move

The shoulder rotates through a wide range of motion. Tattoos on the deltoid muscle shift position as you raise, lower, and rotate your arm. Designs that wrap around the shoulder cap need to account for this movement. Static designs work fine because the distortion during movement is temporary. But placement matters: a design centered on the deltoid will compress when you cross your arms and stretch when you reach upward.

The neck is constantly in motion. Turning, tilting, flexing. Skin on the neck is thinner and more elastic than most body parts. Designs here need to be either small enough that movement doesn’t distort them or placed in a zone that stays relatively stable (the back of the neck is more stable than the sides). Collarbone skin sits over bone and doesn’t move much, making it one of the more predictable placements in this zone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do neck tattoos affect job opportunities?

They can, depending on your industry. Corporate, legal, financial, and medical fields tend to be more conservative about visible neck tattoos. Creative industries, tech startups, hospitality, and trade professions are generally more accepting. Remote work has also reduced the impact for many people. Research your specific field and consider where your career might go in the next 5-10 years before committing to a highly visible placement.

What's the pain level for collarbone vs. shoulder?

Collarbone is 7-8 out of 10. The bone is right at the surface with almost no cushioning. The closer to the center (near the throat notch), the more intense it gets. The shoulder (deltoid muscle area) is much more comfortable at 4-5 out of 10. There’s a thick muscle layer that absorbs the needle vibration. The top of the shoulder near the trapezius is slightly more sensitive, around 6.

Do shoulder tattoos distort when you work out?

Gradual muscle development (over months and years) causes minimal visible distortion. Your skin stretches proportionally with muscle growth. The exception is very rapid size changes, like competitive bodybuilding transformations, which can stretch designs noticeably. Regular gym-goers and recreational athletes generally don’t experience meaningful distortion. If anything, well-developed shoulders make tattoos there look better because the muscle creates a more dimensional canvas.

What size works best for collarbone tattoos?

The collarbone gives you roughly a 4-6 inch horizontal canvas. Scripts, small florals, and horizontal compositions work best. Aim for designs that follow the bone’s natural line rather than fighting against it. Designs under 2 inches can look lost on the collarbone. Designs over 7 inches may extend into the shoulder or chest territory, which changes the visual category of the tattoo from “collarbone piece” to “chest piece.”
